Fight Dementia with Brain Training Exercises

It’s a common belief that mental exercises help prevent dementia in later life. A new study proves it, but suggests that not all brain games are the same. Learn which type of mental exercise has the greatest protective effect.


The research presented at this year’s Alzheimer’s Association International Conference shows that participating in a speed-of-processing cognitive training program can nearly half the risk of developing dementia. The 10-year study included 2,785 healthy adults. The participants were divided into one of three training groups: memory improvement, reasoning, and training in speed-of-processing. Each completed 10 one-hour training sessions over five weeks. Some received four additional sessions one year after the original training, and four more two years after that.


Study authors measured cognitive function immediately and at one, two, three, five and 10 years after the training. The speed training group cut their risk of cognitive impairment the most. Participants who completed the extra training sessions in speed-of-processing were 48 percent less likely to develop dementia.
